There is a problem with your PPP:
You should have a line like:
Jan  9 20:56:06 w kernel: PPP: version 2.3.9 (demand dialling)
instead of
Jan  9 20:56:06 w kernel: PPP: version 2.2.0 (dynamic channel allocation)
and you have the line
Jan  9 20:56:06 w pppd[6384]: pppd 2.3.8 started by root, uid 0
which is obviously not the ppp-2.3.9 .

So you may have not installed your new ppp-2.3.9 correctly.
