Try 'logfile /dev/null' in your options.pptp.  Then you'll see the
error is something else and you'll need to add 'debug' to find out what.
pppd writes some log stuff to stdout before LCP comes up which causes the
'bad checksum' (ignored by pptpd, but gives you a spurious error).
