[pptp-server] Linux pptp client via async dialup ?

Has anyone got the Linux PPTP client <> PPTPD server ver 1.0.0 working
via a async dialup connection  ?
The server has a static IP ( and of course the client doesnt).

I  establish an PPP connection on the client as per this:

1) /sbin/ifup ppp0
2) /usr/sbin/pptp  pptp_server  name  mpeel  remotename  client


the ppp connect comes up but the pptp connection gives :
Jul 11 14:04:03 localhost pppd[696]: peer refused to authenticate:
terminating l
