[pptp-server] Changing pppd Netmask?

I have everything working with Poptop 1.0 on Redhat Linux 6.0 with ppp 2.3.8
installed and patched with encryption. My only problem is that pppd keeps
assigning a default netmask of 255.255.255.255 to every client that
connects!

How do I override this value?

I tried adding netmask 255.255.255.0 to the /etc/ppp/options file, but it
seems to ignore this value. I read about the netmask command in the man for
pppd where it says the following:

"On some platforms, pppd will always use 255.255.255.255 for the netmask if
that is the only appropriate value for a point-to-point interface"

Is there ANY WAY to hack pppd to force it to use a netmask other than
255.255.255.255?

Any help would be appreciated.
