In the new FAQ:

4.3 How can I use /etc/smbpasswd for chap authentication?

There is a patch available for this which was posted to
the pptp-server mailing list a while back:

http://lists.schulte.org/pipermail/pptp-server/2000-April/002190.html

Apply this patch to the pppd program, rebuild, and then put
&/etc/smbpasswd in the chap-secrets file where you would normally
put the plain text password string.
