I resolved that error by getting theif_ppp_2.2.17.diff patch referenced in 
the generic example on http://www.vibres.com/pptpd/example.html

Then I got this:
ppp.c:1051: structure has no member named 'state'
ppp.c: In function 'ppp_async_encode':
make[2]: *** [ppp.o] Error 1
make[1]: *** [_modsubdir_net] Error 2
make: *** [_mod_drivers] Error 2

That's the end of a long string of the "structure has ..." lines.

Compiling on a RedHat 6.2 box, kernel 2.2.17.  Using ppp-2.3.11 with the 
patches listed on the web page listed above.
